I've had some beat-up discs that I've tried ripping with EAC without AccurateRip. For me, if I hear a pop or other distortion I need to know if it was on the CD, and on everyone else's copy of the CD. Mostly it depends on your preference, and your confidence in your ripping process. I ended up picking up new copies cheap and they ripped ok. They do have a slightly "cloudy" appearance to the plastic. Maybe it's the age of the CD's, I dont know. They look pristine, but I couldn't get accurate rips out of them. I had a heck of a time ripping my Diament Led Zeppelin cds. As Roebeet said, sometimes a rip on my main drive will fail, but it will rip on my backup drive with no problem. I've ripped about 1200 of my cds so far, and I'd say maybe 35-40 havent been totally accurate. It's pretty rare for me to see a rip fail AR. In those cases I was glad to have the AR flags so I knew to re-rip them. And in one case, on an enhanced CD that had video content, the last track of a rip had 2 minutes of silence added to it by dbpoweramp for some crazy reason (hence failing AR). On a few occasions I have heard audible clicks in playback of inaccurate files. Mostly it's just reassuring to me when I see all the tracks light up as accurate during the rip (I use dbpoweramp cd ripper for all my rips btw). The majority of the time I can't actually hear any audible error in the flac file, but I re-rip it to accurate if possible anyway (If not I mark the folder on my server so I can re-try it at some point later). Sometimes a possible duplicate needs to be verified, DeDup allows the track(s) in question to be played, during playback the stream can be swapped between the two tracks, a real time saver.Well, for me I wouldn't go without AccurateRip, mostly because I'm OCD and want to know if I make a bad rip so I can re-rip it with another drive, etc. Two duplicate Bob Marley tracks have been detected, the lower quality MP3 can be safely deleted, removing the duplicate. Often a duplicate is a lower quality copy of a track (such as a lower mp3 bitrate), or a track appearing on both a compilation and original album. Why settle for anything less than perfect rips?
